I wrote this in 2019 to my friend
Performing penance up until Christmas day is definitely a good Catholic Tradition.
And it fits with the Word about the absolute guarantee of doing charity work as a sure means of Eternal Salvation.
Because everyone forgets about that section where Jesus reveals He is the least of us in a unique unpredictable way.
Not in His glory but in His weakness He suffers as with the poor and sick through there pain and deprivation.
Fasting is encouraged mostly for the strong to unite themselves in solidarity to the weak.
If only to remember the suffering of true hunger or to conquer hunger with prayer or conquer sleep with prayer but these are temporary obstacles to be trained with not overcome by.
Fasting regularly is for ascetics.
Christian fasting is based on what Isaiah reveals is an acceptable fast to the Lord which is to perform the Gospel
ie feed the hungry, free the captives, heal the sick, live peacefully with others, and make your prayers heard on high through the contrition of your heart which is the most acceptable fast to the Lord.
The dedication of the heart, mind, body and soul to the Lord is the greatest fast which we see Jesus perform as a 40 day fast like the one of Moses.
The 40 days were used to consecrate the Lord's Son with the ministry of angels as the final reward for His resisting the tempter's cruel snares and foul lies.
The spiritual wilderness is the battleground of saints who grapple against the evil of the world and conquer through the Gospel which binds evil with Uncreated Light,
then with the Cross they cast out evil from temple of God, then they cleanse the temple with the rededication to the Holy Spirit,
then after the temple is cleansed by the Spirit of Holiness, the temple is filled with the fragrant smell of prayer which are holy prayers,
finally through the lifting of the heart up into state of bliss the Resurrection of the Risen Lord brings forth a living hope,
leading to the glorious Ascension of the Lord into the seat of High Priest in Heaven,
prayers for grace are then offered that we might commune with the Holy Spirit, the Source of All-Goodness, the One True Light,  the Lord of Sacred Glory,
then the temple of the body is filled with infinite light and bathed in the regeneration of new life in the Light of Christ and the love of the Father of Light.
This is how the candlestick is light and lifted up to a high place to give light to the entire room.
