The Star of Bethlehem led the Magi to the Christ Child.
Was the star a newly created star? Or was it an existing star?

The Magi do not call the Star of Bethlehem by that name.
In The Gospel of Matthew Chapter 2 Verse 2 they refer to it as being "his star".
It was a sign to them that a king was born.

The Star of Bethlehem is traditionally linked to the Star Prophecy in the Book of Numbers:
I see him, but not now;
I behold him, but not near;
A Star shall come out of Jacob;
A Scepter shall rise out of Israel
Numbers Chapter 24 Verse 17
