Why was Saul's name changed to Paul?

My NAB Concordance reports Paul's family was Jewish but had Roman citizenship and gave him both names Saul, Jewish, and Paul, Latin.  It does not comment specifically on their reasoning.  The Roman name implied his citizenship, which Scripture reported extended his life and influence.
