Fidelis was born at Sigmaringen of a prominent family in the principality in 1577.     
He received the name Mark in baptism.

In 1604 Mark accompanied, as preceptor, three young gentlemen on their travels through the principal parts of Europe.     
During six years of travel, he attended Mass very frequently.

During six years of travel Mark visited the hospitals and churches in every town he and the Swabian gentlemen came to.
