Elizabeth of Portugal (1271-1336) was originally the Infanta Elizabeth of Aragon.
She was the daughter of the Infante Peter (later King Peter III) and Constance of Aragon.
Elizabeth said the full Divine Office daily. She attended twice-daily choral Masses.

Elizabeth repeatedly sought and effected peace between King Denis and their son Alfonso.
Alfonso thought he was passed over to favor the King's illegitimate children.

Elizabeth of Aragon (Portugal) was named for her grandaunt, St. Elizabeth of Hungary,
who was canonized in 1235. Queen Elizabeth's bishop testified that she had a custom of
inviting in lepers, whom she would bathe and clothe.

Elizabeth's marriage to King Denis was arranged in 1281 when she was ten years old.
It was in 1288 that Elizabeth married Denis. She was seventeen.

Elizabeth's husband King Denis became known as the Farmer King because he planted a vast pine forest
near the city of Leiria to prevent the relentless soil erosion that threatened the entire region.

Queen Elizabeth enjoyed a remarkable understanding of engineering and architecture.
She herself designed and oversaw the building of several churches.

In 1289 King Denis signed the Concordat of Forty Articles with Pope Nicholas IV, swearing to protect the Church's interests in Portugal.
