The encyclical Evangelium Vitae by Pope John Paul II in 1995 made the condemnation of abortion a doctrine of the Catholic Church equal in authority to the founding of the Church by Christ and all the Mariam dogmas.

Welcome, Chrisg, and thanks for thought-provoking comments. The current Catechism indicates quite firmly that Rome and Apostolic doctrine have consistently condemned abortion since the earliest days of the Church. Yet universal enforcement has always been impossible, and the view of infallibility has been less consistent. I'm grateful you've launched me into serious reading.
