Jacques Berthieu was born on November 17, 1838 in Polminhac in central France.   
He was educated in Aurillac by the Brothers of the Christian Schools.   
He made his first Holy Communion at the age of twelve.

Jacques Berthieu was ordained a priest on May 21, 1864. 
He was then appointed curate of Roannes-Saint-Mary near Aurillac.

On October 31, 1874 Jacques Berthieu entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus in Pau.
