I wonder how much of what has been written about TV is about the content (though I realize that, especially with growing bodies that movement of those bodies is terribly important as is not being only a spectator).

For instance, I wonder how much would be written about TV if the only thing available were programs like on EWTN or others like that? Is it not a large part due to the programs available?

Hmm, that's an interesting thought.  I do know that there are many, many studies dating way back to the 50's on the role of violence modeling and eventual outcome on the part of behaviors in children.  Then, when TV got more common, the studies shifted to that.  Not too much research about sexual behavior and TV role modeling, a most telling thing.  But I think if there were only things like EWTN, nature shows, discovery channel....... and most necessary, hockey ,  the hours of TV use would be automatically less.

As far as the violence modeling, did they do any studies on the cartoons watched in the 50s (like Coyote making Roadrunner go off a cliff or the sheriff hitting Yogi Bear over the head with a frying pan). Even tho' I am a definite wimp as far as the shows and even "youth" cartoons today, I have no problem with cartoons like that. Maybe because it brings back good memories, but I think the violence then was sillier and so less able to be a role model. What do you think?

I'll have to look into that....... but the first game of the playoffs just started and I want to see Ottawa trounce the  former cup champions, Penguins.  I have a personal dislike for Sidney Crosby; then the Red wings verse Phoenix Coyotes......... it's going to be a lot of violent TV for us tonight!   

Not too violent.  Guess no one wants to get hurt this early on.  couldn't watch the Red Wings since they blocked it out because Phoenix is too close to us and they want people to go there.  they lost, which is good.  That means they will win when we are there.  My husband travels a lot for his job so the hotel is free and two blocks from the stadium.  I am happy about that!

Shin, glad you liked the studies.  I think they covered content Brigid.  I haven't read this thing in a long time.  My son's are older now.  But I also think that a child can watch violence and sex on TV, etc when they are older and yet still not act it out....... parental values passed on.......... I know, I know, if the values are passed on they wouldn't watch that stuff.  Truth be known, my boys don't watch sex but they do like Rambo, the Bourne trilogy, and the like........ Quite violent.  But I must confess also, I like the Borne trilogy.  But I also liked the new Star Trek movie and I liked Stargate when it was on TV.  Now, nothing interests me.  Just nature and discovery and hockey.  I read research and write now.

Bailey2, I haven't seen the Bourne trilogy, but loved the Star Trek movies. I saw them years ago, but the theme song keeps running through my head even now.

as there's lots more women involved in their faith than men.
