No, it's just something I picked up when I was studying Japanese and fell into the habit of using everywhere. Now, everybody just thinks of me as a pain in the shin because I always tell people about the harder things in life, so it's just about perfect!
I have the perfectly ordinary first name of Jeffrey which my mother's good looking friend suggested to her, and she picked instead of David or Gregory.

lol
my maiden name was Jeffries, and people always insisted I had a brother Jeffrey, but I only had Christian, Scott, and Daniel, and sister Nicki (Nicolette)
what does 'shin' mean in japanese? is it a name or something else that you relate to? just wondering. my nephew Kevin is very good at picking up languages -- he speaks chinese very well -- he spent a month there last year -- i learned a bit of german, but no other languages, except how to sing 'head-shoulders-knees-and-toes' in japanese, although i had a korean aunt who taught us how to count to 10 in korean when we were little.

All good names!
I used to listen to German opera but I never picked up any of it truly, you did not need to know the language to appreciate it.
A friend of mine learned Chinese and Japanese, I was impressed with his skill with languages! Mine is poorer than I liked, I picked up less than I thought I would. I've taken courses in Latin, French, and Japanese, and done very poorly with all of them.
I just looked it up (I forgot the meanings) and read that Shin can be written using different kanji characters and can mean:
* ?, "true"
* ?, "extend"
* ?, "new"
* ?, "heart"
* ?, "belief"
* ?, "progress"
* ?, "humility"
* ?, "advance"
* ?, "gentleman"
If you can read the above you can see there are many different characters for the same sounding word, but with different meanings. Japanese like Chinese is a language full of different symbols to represent words, unlike our 26 character alphabet, it has tens of thousands of characters.
I just picked it up because I liked the sound of it, more than the meaning though I recall I was looking up characters that represented 'belief' and 'faith' and 'heart'.
So you can see if you want to learn to write in the language it is tougher than other languages. So mostly I just studied spoken Japanese, though I made a few attempts to do more that fell largely flat.
I really think that Asia and many other countries need to hear the quotes of the saints in their languages.
I appreciate the Japanese family traditions of respect, hard work, discipline, education, etc. America had some good influence on them and some bad after we took over and reformed their government. My grandfather fought in the war against the Japanese, he was on an island in the Philippines shortly before the end.
Some of the forum members like to make up haiku.
They're all incipient poet laureates!

Oh they have several other shorter alphabets so to speak, that they combine with the others, that are sound only based..
They still type out the main alphabet, but what they do is they type the sound of it first, then get a drop-down list of choices as the computer guesses what they want, and they choose from that.
Had a Korean friend in school when I was a boy, he was a straight A student. Those Asian parents keep those children hard at work! Though he didn't have quite as terrible the threats behind it as he did in the old country.
