It is like the various televised quizes I watch on occasions. You have the answer but somebody else quicker on the bell and in responding, blurts it out before you can say "boo"!

Well, hmm, I want to say more I really want to do a little more research to make sure that I have the correct answer after all. 

Sometimes a virtue is 'best in a certain situation'.. and I want to make sure I wasn't mistaken about that..

Prudence, Fortitude, Temperance, Justice..

They're all cardinal virtues.. 'hinge' virtues..

Okay I think I've exercised prudence enough about answering the last quiz question..

The best answer I have for which is the most important cardinal virtue is...

Prudence!

The answer to why it is first is similar to the reasons Susy gave for Temperance.

Basically it is a guiding and moderating virtue, that comes first before the others.

However.. one resource I was reading said that Justice was the most important, but without explaining it sufficiently. However it looks like the majority of resources I read so far Prudence is it, I could only find one claim for Justice.

Sometimes each of these virtues is particularly more important to deal with some kids of situations. So Fortitude can be particularly important in some circumstances, Temperance in others.. or considered in different lights.. but it appears that in general, Prudence is regarded as first.
 
Hopefully I am not saying that imprudently! Sometimes I am better at finding what I wish to find in books than others! This time has been tough! 

As times goes by and I learn more about the virtues I will relate what I find and we'll all get an even clearer idea of how they all work and are important in our spiritual lives.

"Prudence is the virtue by which you know the means to attain the ends. It is the virtue that tells you to do the right thing, in the right time, in the right circumstances."

"It is its function to do three things: to take counsel, i.e. to cast about for the means suited in the particular case under consideration to reach the end of any one moral virtue; to judge soundly of the fitness of the means suggested; and, finally, to command their employment."

"Without prudence bravery becomes foolhardiness; mercy sinks into weakness, and temperance into fanaticism."
