This flower is known for use in treating depression, along with anxiety, loss of appetite, and insomnia. It can be found on the dry ground of roadsides, in meadows and woods.

Also known as Barbe de Saint-Jean, Herbe de la Saint-Jean.

Some say that St. John the Evangelist, who was the only apostle who stood at the foot of the cross, may have gathered the herb after he noticed it drenched in Christ's blood. Others say the plant may be named after St. John the Baptist, associating the plant with his beheading: the red spots on the plant are said to be drops of his blood. Another story says the herb is named for the Knights of St. John who used it to treat the wounded in the crusades.

Meditating on the history of the plant makes for some beautiful thoughts no?

I used to grow roses, those St. Cecilia roses sure are something. I heard a powerful sermon on Ven. Mary of Agreda's visits to America once.

And learning about herbs is and medicine is always helpful!

Especially if you plan on growing them! 

Now when I see those purple thistles I know what they are called! Antifungal herbs are always good to know about.
