In 1086, St. Canute, King of Denmark and father of Blessed Charles the Good, was slain in St. Alban's Church, Odense.
Charles was five years old. He was taken to the court of Robert, Count of Flanders, his maternal grandfather.
When Charles grew up, he became a knight and accompanied Robert in a crusade to the Holy Land.
Charles' feast day is March 2nd.

After making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, Charles was offered the crown of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. However, he refused.

Charles made sure that times of truce were respected. He fought against unethical marketing practices.

In 1125 Charles expelled Jews from Flanders, attributing their price gouging as a cause of
additional suffering during the famine which afflicted his domains in that year.

Margaret of Clermont (1104/05-1132) married Charles I, Count of Flanders in 1115.
As a dowry, she received the county of Amiens.
