Once again, many thanks for a very enjoyable thread. It helps especially because my file for Christmas liturgy and devotion is sadly very thin. I have a bit on the Christmas Octave; there is a little more on the 12 days of Christmas, mostly the English song (do you think it is true England forbade private Christmas celebration from 1558 to 1829?); and a bit about 40 days of Christmas (until Feb 2- Candlemas) in ancient times. Can you suggest more sources of Christmas devotion (I give praise and thanks for all our wonderful caroles)? Could you and others comment on the timing of your Christmas celebration? Thanks again.
In 1558 Queen Elizabeth I of England took the throne.
In 1559 the Act of Uniformity abolished the old worship.
The open practice of Catholicism was forbidden by law.
In 1647 the English parliament passed a law that made Christmas illegal.
