Angelus

Play the Angelus Bells

The Angelus is recited at three particular times during the day; generally 6 am, 12 noon, and 6 pm. (In the Carthusians the timing is slightly different, more French I believe) Traditionally it is recited kneeling while a bell is rung.

V.
The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.
V.  Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariae.
R. And she conceived of the Holy Ghost.
R.  Et concepit de Spiritu Sancto.

All. Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of our Lord, pray for us sinners now and in the hour of our death.   Amen.
All.  Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Domini nostri, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc, et in hora mortis nostrae.  Amen.

V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord.
V.  Ecce ancilla Domini.
R.  Be it done unto me according to thy word.
R.  Fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum.

Amen.

V. And the Word was made Flesh.
V.  Et Verbum caro factum est.
R.  And dwelt among us.
R.  Et habitavit in nobis.

Amen.

V.  Pray for us, O Holy Mother of Christ.
V.  Ora pro nobis, sancta Christi Genetrix.
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
R.  Ut digni efficiamur promissionibus Christi.

V.  Let us pray. Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that, we to whom the Incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an Angel, may by His Passion and Cross, be brought to the glory of His Resurrection. Through the same Christ our Lord.
All.  Amen.
V.  Oremus.
All.  Amen.

If you wish to play the Angelus bells regularly, you can download the bells and get a free alarm clock program from places such as Cinnamon Software, and install it to play at the traditional hours to help you to pray the Angelus.  Cheesy

Well, I'm willing to pray it at anytime. Cheesy

As long as one is not following a discipline in a religious order requiring it at a particular time, why not? Cheesy If one is in religion however, one must stop on a pin, and start on a pin, normally, in regards to matters of discipline.  Grin

Most of the paintings I have seen of "The Angelus" is of two people standing  in a field with heads bowed in a prayerful pose.
It ties in with what I read about the origin of this prayer at CAF.
The poster had this to say:
Quote
the Angelus developed as a prayer for working people to say when the bells rang for the monks to prayer their LOTH in the monastery, so when they heard the church bells they could stop and pray to sanctify the hours of the day. the Regina Coeli is prayed during the Easter season.

I tend to think like Shin, that prayer is prayer; it can be said any time, any place without restriction.

This is one beautiful prayer but unfortunataly it is hardly ever prayed.
In fact I do not remember the last time I heard it being prayed. Privately when I remember or am reminded like now, I say it then forget again after some time. Sad

I had a pleasant surprise today.
I was attending a meeting for the Perpetual Eucharistic Adorers of the parish; at twelve noon the Church bells tolled and everyone got up and the Angelus was prayed!
My hour is 9am to 10 am on Sundays so I have been missing. Communal prayers said at the Chapel at designated hours are :
The Angelus at 6am, 12 noon, 7pm and 12 midnight daily
Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3 pm and 3 am. daily
The Rosary from 3.15 am to 4.15 am daily.
